The History of Humanity is Incredibly Short
>>
I’m Mateusz Fabiś, I was born in 1992, I’m a visual artist and filmmaker based in Poznań, Poland. I studied at the University of Arts in Poznań, graduating with a Master’s Degree in Intermedia (2017). During the studies I participated in three following programme exchanges, studying: Visual Communication and Multimedia in Faculdade de Belas-Artes (Academy of Fine Arts) in Lisbon, Portugal (2014), Film in Norland kunst-og filmfagskole (Norland Film and Art School) in Kabelvåg, Norway (2015), and Photography and Audiovisual Arts in Ανώτατο Τεχνολογικό Εκπαιδευτικό Ίδρυμα Αθήνας (Technological Educational Institute) in Athens, Greece (2017). At some point I decided to extend my education at the University of Adam Mickiewicz in Poznań, at The Department of Asian Studies with Modern Hebrew Language (2015-2019). I’m a versatile artist, author of installations, photographer, performer, graphic designer, filmmaker and linguist. Director and producer of two short films: Kingdom (2015) and Harmony (2017). Between 2017- 2019 I was associated with Polish Dance Theatre where I was responsible for visual communication and multimedia use in performances. I was as well a lecturer of Image Reconstruction Workshop during Creative Labs (2019) in Poznan. _______________________________ In my artistic works, I’m focused on confrontation between nature and culture, pointing in large part to atavisms, primary instincts, and processes which through theory and history of images are being responsible for our visual habits. I’m interested in human activities, which are being driven by instincts, therethrough stay visiblleless. My works explore relations between organisms (animals, plants, humans, objects), and slightly try to make an evident about the actions they hold to each another. My works allow to watch their interactions - in order to see unvisible mechanisms which force organisms to behave in a certain way. Although at first may seem completely random. This randomness seem not to be a completely coincidence. Due to the situations created by myself, it is possible to take a closer look on reasons of behaviour, and understand the upcoming attitude. I try to confronts historical and sociopolitical context with the lives of many spicies. Tinted with dissapointment, and irony my works visualizes and question the notion of the nature - culture divide. Most of the works happen in everyday spaces such as, apartaments, parks, streets and shopping centers, in order to display contrast. Bodies taken into images and performances are treated as biological machines and often tools that enable to sense the lack of presense, and contribute consideration about themself and about all being. Inspired by the slow - motion cinema and works of Bela Tarr, Theodorus Angelopolous, Michael Haneke during abroad living, I produced and directed two shorts films, which explore male relations. Each of them examines manhood in different enviroment. Kingdom among Norwegian far - north Mountains and Harmony inside south Greek townhouse flat. Both following main interest of artist, trying to unveil the factors that drive men and impact their preservation. Extreme distinction of surroundings is only about to show two different aproaches of a relation, but the conclusion which is being made beyond the image is simple. Every life (despite of expirience) goes the same path, because the history of humanity is incredibly short. storytelling, archetype, personification, manhood stereotype, atavism, social construct, story civilisation, distance, species, dream, minimalism languages, irony, watching, black humour, nature bromance, harmony, visual storytelling, culture fairy tail, masculinity, reversion, myth, homosexuality crisis, society, identyfication, instincts
